Physical media is making a comeback. In the age of online shopping and streaming, vinyl records, CDs, and DVDs still persist. Why do so many people (myself included) deliberately collect their favourite music, shows, movies, etc. in formats that have been largely replaced by newer technology? What value does our society see in hanging onto things considered “outdated,” but still so highly coveted? Why even bother walking into a brick-and-mortar shop when you can just buy something on a website and have it shipped to your door?
My answer is simple: I love physical spaces, physical products, and human connection. We live in an isolating and increasingly digital world where too many things are now screen-based. Streaming is only temporary and therefore false ownership. Giant companies like Amazon and Spotify exist solely for profit; in contrast, local shops serve the community.
At every location, I had thoughtful, authentic conversations and interactions no online subscription could ever buy. I wandered around places with tons of character that reflected the vibrant personalities of their owners. Sorting through each store’s catalogue with my own two hands made my time spent browsing more worthwhile and my finds more rewarding. I truly believe there has never been a better time to buy local.
For the Record extends you a warm welcome into each of these spaces. Come look around and stay awhile. If you find something you like, it can be yours to keep forever.
